Valenki – warm winter footwear covering the calves, permeable to water but providing good protection against frost. They are made of thick felt, formed from multiple layers of material using steam and a special block to shape them.
Produced by Russians since the 18th century, they became popular in the 19th century, when a cheaper method of manufacturing them was developed. Previously, they were expensive footwear, only wealthy people could afford them. This type of footwear remains popular in Russia to this day. Modern versions usually have rubberized soles or are equipped with rubber overlays, which extend the life of the footwear and allow for use even in wet conditions.

These types of shoes were used by both the Imperial Russian Army and the RKKA during both World Wars, and even well into the post-war period.
