These collar tabs were worn in the 3rd Panzer Division "Totenkopf." In 1940, regulations changed and ranks were banned from being worn on collar tabs; instead, ranks were displayed on the shoulder board. Many officers, in order to emphasize their attachment to the unit and to emphasize their length of service, continued to wear the older arrangement (skull + rank tab, only empty).
