FOR REENACTMENT?
These types of patches were worn by units forming the Kalmyk Legion. This formation was formed in the autumn of 1942. A special unit of the German military intelligence service, Abwehrtruppe 103, was selected to form the Kalmyk Cavalry Corps. It included two cavalry squadrons. The resulting unit was called Kalmüken Verband Dr. Doll. The unit's first commander was Sonderführer Othmar Rudolf Werba, codename "Dr. Doll." By the summer of 1943, seven cavalry squadrons had been formed. This formation stood out from the other Ostlegions. The Germans treated it as a de facto allied military formation, granting it a significant degree of autonomy. Therefore, the officers and non-commissioned officers were Kalmyks, mostly former Red Army prisoners of war, with only a few German liaison officers assigned to the headquarters. The unit was most often used in reconnaissance, anti-partisan, cover and support operations. The formation survived until the end of the war and capitulated on May 12, 1945 in Austria.
