The decoration was established on November 28, 1933, initially only for members of the SA (Sturmabteilung) organization. Starting from February 1935, the badge was distributed as a basic sports badge to members of all paramilitary organizations and soldiers of all branches of the army. There were 3 classes of this decoration - bronze, silver and gold.
