Buckles of this type were worn by members of the "Stahlhelm" organization, which existed during the Weimar Republic. The veterans' organization, Der Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten, was founded in late 1918 by Franz Seldte. It brought together soldiers returning from the trenches of World War I who were struggling to find their place in the post-war political landscape. This organization used its own uniforms and equipment, including belts with the buckles described above, until its forced incorporation into the National Socialist militias in 1934-1935.
