FOR REENACTMENT?
The US Army M1917 Overseas Cap was the first folding cap adopted by the US Army. It was introduced during World War I for the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) stationed in Europe.
Before entering the war, the US Army wore the wide-brimmed M1911 "Montana Peak" hat. However, this stiff hat was unwieldy, easily damaged in the field, and unsuitable for wearing under the newly adopted M1917 helmet. To solve this problem, the U.S. Army designed a soft, woolen, envelope-style cap (forage cap). This cap could be quickly folded and stowed in a pocket or even worn under a combat helmet.
