These gloves were used by the British Army during both World War I and World War II, as well as by the Polish Armed Forces (PSZnZ) and other allied armies using British equipment. These gloves evolved from designs used during World War I, when civilian organizations ("Comfort Groups") knitted clothing for soldiers.
