The M1 Garand is an American semi-automatic rifle in 7.62 mm (.30-06 Springfield) caliber, which became the world's first mass-produced and widely deployed semi-automatic infantry rifle. Developed by John C. Garand, the design was officially adopted in 1936 and served as the primary weapon of the US Army during World War II and the Korean War. The rifle was widely exported to allied and friendly countries in the second half of the 20th century. It was also the prototype for many designs developed and produced after the war.
