Swords of this type were used by cavalry officers in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War in the 19th century. It is also know as "Shelby Sword", which was named after General Joseph O. Shelby, who, commanding the "Iron Brigade" on the side of the Confederate army, carried out the longest cavalry raid of the war in enemy territory.
