A replica of a Japanese anti-aircraft mortar shell. A replica made of steel in the form of a hollow cylinder, with a glued-on wooden tip. The bottom and the lid can be unscrewed.

The shell was a tube containing seven individual mines, each approximately 11/16 inches (18 mm) in diameter and 3 inches (76 mm) long. Each mine was equipped with its own parachute. Upon launch, the mortar projected the shell to a range of 3,000 to 4,000 feet (900 to 1,200 m) and a maximum altitude of approximately 600 meters (2,000 ft). The shell released the mines at the top of an arc. They then descended by parachutes. They were ignited and detonated upon contact with a target (e.g. an aircraft that caught on the cable of a falling mine during flight) or after a specified time. The projectile could also be fired from a standard 70 mm Type 11 infantry mortar. Besides its anti-aircraft role, the projectile was also used as anti-personnel cluster munitions. The replica offered does not contain any explosives and is empty inside.

  • New, unused item!
  • The replica is made of steel!
  • Dimensions: 32 cm x 6.7 cm.
  • The replica shows signs of storage (paint chips).
