A replica of German black leather gaiters. Leather gaiters in the German Army during World War I were primarily worn by officers, cavalry, and some non-commissioned officers and privates, especially in elite or mounted units. They were a symbol of higher status, but also a practical element. They were designed to protect the ankle and calf from mud, dirt, and partially from abrasions and other minor bruises. Officers also wore leather gaiters as part of their more elegant officer uniform. Worn over shorter boots, they gave the appearance of tall officer boots.
