FOR REENACTMENT?

These puttees were used by American soldiers during World War I. They replaced the earlier canvas gaiters and provided better protection from mud in the trenches.

The US Army M1917 uniform system was the standard field uniform for American soldiers during World War I. It was a simplified, more mass-produced version of the earlier M1912 pattern, adapted to the realities of trench warfare. The whole thing was made of thick, olive-drab woolen fabric.
