The Order of the Patriotic War was established on May 20, 1942, and was often awarded immediately after a soldier's heroic act, which included, among others: destroying an important object in enemy territory, destroying an aircraft with personal weapons, making a successful landing on enemy territory, capturing military technology on the enemy or leading to the sinking of an enemy ship. The Order of the 2nd class was awarded to, among others: Major Franciszek Kubsz, the first chaplain of the 1st DP T. Kościuszko, for raising the morale of Polish soldiers during the Battle of Lenino.
