FOR REENACTMENT

The US Army assault vest (often called the Invasion Vest or Assault Jacket) is a highly specialized piece of World War II equipment. It was designed and manufactured hastily in early 1944 specifically for the Normandy landing (D-Day). The Americans were inspired by the British 1942 Pattern Battle Jerkin assault vest. The goal was to replace the standard M1928 backpack, ammunition belt, and shoulder straps with a single integrated system that would better distribute weight and increase soldiers' mobility, while also allowing for the carrying of more equipment and ammunition during an assault operations. These vests were primarily issued to units that formed the core of the first wave of the landings on June 6, 1944, including the 1st, 4th, and 29th Infantry Divisions, as well as the 2nd Ranger Battalion. The vest proved to be a ineffective in combat conditions. Soldiers considered it too heavy, stiff, and caused overheating. Most soldiers removed their vests within the first weeks of combat.
