These types of patches were worn by soldiers from the Terek unit, one of numerous Cossack units serving in both the Wehrmacht and the Waffen-SS. The formation of Cossack volunteer units began in 1941. They were used primarily on the Eastern Front. Many units survived until the end of the war in 1945, when, in the final months, fearing Russian retribution, they attempted to break through to the west and surrender to the Western Allies.
