The Order of the Patriotic War was established on May 20, 1942, and was often awarded immediately after a soldier's heroic act, which included, among others: destroying an important object in enemy territory, destroying an aircraft with personal weapons, making a successful landing on enemy territory, capturing military technology on the enemy or leading to the sinking of an enemy ship.
