A replica of the British World War II "No. 4 Commando" patch. The patch, in the form of an arch, is embroidered with crimson thread on a dark blue (Navy Blue) felt backing. The unit number "No. X" is embroidered inside, along with the inscription "COMMANDO."

No. 4 Commando was formed in late 1940. It became famous for daring actions, including the Lofoten raid (Operation Claymore), the destruction of the Varengeville artillery battery during the disastrous Dieppe raid (which was considered the only complete success of the operation), and the D-Day landing on Sword Beach in Normandy (as part of the 1st Special Service Brigade). It was into No. 4 Commando that the French commandos under the command of Captain Philippe Kieffer (10 Inter-Allied Commando) were incorporated and fought alongside the British.

FOR REENACTMENT?

During World War II, British Commandos wore this type of patch, which identified their affiliation with a specific unit under command of Combined Operations Headquarters.

Commando units were formed during World War II in June 1940, following a request from Winston Churchill for a special force capable of conducting raids in territories occupied by the Third Reich. Initially, the units recruited soldiers from the British Army who volunteered for newly formed special-purpose brigades. Eventually, the Commando units were supplemented by members of all branches of the British Armed Forces and foreign volunteers from countries occupied by Germany. By the end of the war, 25,000 soldiers had completed the Commando course at Achnacarry. This group included not only British volunteers but also volunteers from Greece, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada, Norway, and Poland. The United States Army Rangers and US Marine Corps Raiders were modeled after the Commando units.
