It provides a secure grip when digging. The blade (point) is made of steel, slightly curved and pointed, making it easier to dig through hard ground.

The American M10 infantry shovel (often referred to in military and collectors' nomenclature as the M-1910 Entrenching Tool or E-tool) is an iconic, non-folding shovel. It was standard equipment for US Army soldiers during World War I and II. Despite the introduction of the newer, folding M1943 model during World War II, it was still used by the US military during the Korean War. The shovels reached until the Vietnam conflict, where they were delivered as material aid to the South Vietnamese Army "ARVN".
